Blue Comets announce 2016 athletic awards

On Wednesday night the Blue Comets held their annual Spring Sports awards at the Performing Arts Center at Asheboro High School. In addition to honoring all of the spring sports teams the annual Lee J Stone Sportsmanship awards were presented along with honoring the 2016 Mister and Miss Blue Comet.

The Lee J. Stone Sportsmanship award is presented to male and female student athletes that best represent Asheboro in the area of sportsmanship, on and off the field, after a win or a loss. This year two female student athletes were presented with the honor; Meredith Priest and Katy Cernava.

Priest is a stand out basketball and soccer player, helping lead her soccer team to the second round of the 3A state playoffs this year. She was named first-team Mid Piedmont conference in both basketball and soccer this year. Next year she plans to attend Greensboro College to play soccer.

Cernava is a four year letter winner in cross country and track. A winner of the Randolph County Cross Country Championship in 2015 and a 3-time winner of the Most Valuable Athlete at the Randolph County Track Championship, Cernava has also been named first-team All-Conference by the MPC three times for each sport. She plans to attend North Carolina State University in the Fall

Sawyer Davidson was awarded the male Lee J. Stone Sportsmanship Award. Davidson, a four year letter winner for wrestling, competed all four years in the NCHSAA 3A Wrestling championship, winning the state championship as a Junior and Senior. He has been named first team All-Conference four times, Most outstanding wrestler by the MPC twice and is a two time All-American. Davidson plans to attend the University of North Carolina in the fall where he will wrestle.

Mister and Miss Blue Comet is named to the athlete that best represents Asheboro Athletics in all aspects. A standout athlete, a selfless player and a good role model for their teammates.

Miss Blue Comet was awarded to Salem Davidson, a four year letter winner in volleyball, helping lead her team to the state championship game in 2015, and was named MVP of the Mid Piedmont Conference her senior year. She has continued her involvement in volleyball, volunteering to help coach youth volleyball.  In addition to volleyball she has been a member of the varsity basketball team and varsity track team, participating in the Midwest track and field regionals on Saturday at East Rowan. Salem Davidson plans to attend University of North Carolina in the Fall.

Mister Blue Comet was awarded to a stand out member of the football and wrestling teams, Nick Coe. He is a four-year letter winner in each sport. He competed in the state championship wrestling tournament all four years at Asheboro High School and was named State Champion his junior and senior year. NCHSAA named Coe the 2016 Male Athlete of the Year for the entire state of North Carolina. Next year, Coe plans to attend Auburn University where he will play football.
