Fall Athletic Awards

On December 1, Asheboro held its annual Fall Sports Ceremony honoring the student-athletes and teams from the fall 2016 sports season. Several student athletes were honored for their accomplishments this season. Girls Tennis’ Georgia Shipley was awarded the Tommy Delk Most Improved award and Hannah Eldara was given the Morris Whitson Coaches’ award. Megan Banker received volleyball’s Offense Award while Destinee Goldston was awarded with the Defense award.  Kendall Allen was honored with the Coaches Award by Coach Karen Blanchard. For boys soccer, Fernando Castro received Offensive MVP honors, Scott Villagrana was named Most Improved player. The Midfielder of the Year award was given to Matt Applegate and the Defensive player of the Year was presented to David Corona.   Cross Country’s Madison Priest and Austin Romero were both named the Martin Smith Most Valuable Runner for the 2016 season. Hunter Callicutt received the Coaches Award.

Blue Comets announce 2016 athletic awards

On Wednesday night the Blue Comets held their annual Spring Sports awards at the Performing Arts Center at Asheboro High School. In addition to honoring all of the spring sports teams the annual Lee J Stone Sportsmanship awards were presented along with honoring the 2016 Mister and Miss Blue Comet. The Lee J. Stone Sportsmanship award is presented to male and female student athletes that best represent Asheboro in the area of sportsmanship, on and off the field, after a win or a loss. This year two female student athletes were presented with the honor; Meredith Priest and Katy Cernava. Priest is a stand out basketball and soccer player, helping lead her soccer team to the second round of the 3A state playoffs this year. She was named first-team Mid Piedmont conference in both basketball and soccer this year. Next year she plans to attend Greensboro College to play soccer.
